Here's what you'll need:
- A freezer or ice pack
- A dull knife (butter knife works well)
- A hard surface (table, countertop)
- A credit card or other thin, hard object
- Laundry detergent
- A clean toothbrush (optional)
- White vinegar (optional)
Step 1: Put the item of clothing in the freezer or apply an ice pack to the gummed area for about 15 minutes. This will harden the gum so that it will be easier to remove.
Step 2: Once the gum has hardened, use a dull knife to scrape off as much of the gum as possible. Be careful not to cut the fabric!
Step 3: Place the garment on a hard surface and use a credit card or other thin, hard object to scrape off any remaining gum. Again, be careful not to damage the fabric.
Step 4: If there is still some gum residue left behind, apply a small amount of laundry detergent directly to the area and rub it in with your fingers. Let it sit for a few minutes before laundering as usual.
Step 5: If there is still some gum residue after laundering, soak the area in white vinegar for about 30 minutes before laundering again. The vinegar will help break down the gum residue so that it can be easily removed in the washing machine.
